Reggae legend Bob Marley used shoe polish to darken his hair in a bid to appear "more African", according to his widow Rita.
The star struggled with insecurities over his mixed heritage as the son of a Caucasian father and Jamaican mother, according to a new Marley biography, I & I: The Natural Mystics: Marley, Tosh and Wailer.
Author Colin Grant interviewed members of Marley's family, including his 64-year-old widow, who recalls the singer's anxiety over his fairer complexion in the early 1960s.
